San Antonio Mother Charged With Capital Murder After Two Children Found Dead in Burned Vehicle

San Antonio police arrested a 34-year-old woman on capital murder charges Friday after two children were found dead inside a burning vehicle on the city’s West Side. Officers discovered the bodies just before 5 a.m. behind a warehouse in the 500 block of Richland Hills Drive, near Potranco Road, following a 911 call from a passerby who reported the vehicle fire.

Authorities identified the suspect as Marlene Vidal of Edinburg, who was reportedly living in San Antonio temporarily. Vidal faces two counts of capital murder and one count of arson. According to Bexar County court records, she is being held on a $2.1 million bond . SAPD Assistant Chief Jesse Salame stated that surveillance footage, evidence from the scene, and statements made by Vidal led investigators to believe she was solely responsible for the deaths.

The victims are believed to be 5 and 7 years old, though the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released their formal identities. While police initially reported three children were found, Salame later clarified during a news conference that there were only two victims inside the vehicle. Arson investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire, and Child Protective Services has launched a separate investigation into the case.

Salame noted that while a motive has not been established, mental health issues may have been a factor in the incident. A search of criminal databases in Bexar and Hidalgo counties showed no prior criminal record for Vidal. The San Antonio Police Department is continuing its investigation to prepare the case for the district attorney’s office.
