20-year-old driver killed in Fresno County crash early Sunday

A 20-year-old driver died early Sunday in a suspected two-vehicle DUI collision at the intersection of Cherry and American avenues in Fresno County. The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Details of the collision at Cherry and American avenues

According to the California Highway Patrol, the 20-year-old driver was operating a Chevrolet sedan traveling north on Cherry Avenue at a high rate of speed. CHP stated that the driver allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a Nissan sedan that was heading east on American Avenue. The Nissan was being driven by a rideshare driver and was carrying three passengers at the time of the collision.

After impact, CHP said the Nissan sedan spun and came to a stop blocking both lanes of Cherry Avenue. The Chevrolet sedan continued forward, crashed through a chain-link fence, and came to rest several hundred feet beyond the initial point of impact.

Fatality and injuries reported

Officials stated that the driver of the Chevrolet was not wearing a seatbelt and was found unresponsive inside the vehicle. Fire personnel extricated the driver from the car, and he was pronounced dead. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Jose Reyes, 20, with an unknown city of residence.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the rideshare driver and three passengers in the Nissan sedan were transported to a local hospital for complaints of pain. No additional injury details were provided.

Alcohol suspected; investigation ongoing

CHP spokesperson Mike Salas stated that alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision. Authorities confirmed that the incident remains under investigation.
