LAPD Officer's Identity Withheld Following Fatal Dog Shooting in Canoga Park
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is withholding the identity of the officer involved in the fatal shooting of a golden Saint Berdoodle in Canoga Park last month, citing threats to the officer's life. LAPD Capt. Mike Bland confirmed that the officer's name has not been released due to an ongoing investigation into these threats. State law typically requires the disclosure of officers' names in on-duty shootings, but exceptions are made when there is a proven threat.
On June 13, the dog, named Jameson, was shot by an LAPD officer while exiting the apartment of its owner, Marie Marseille. Officers had responded to a welfare check after a neighbor reported concerns about Marseille's well-being. Body camera footage shows the dog barking at the officers, prompting one officer to draw his weapon and fire four shots as Jameson approached. A civil rights lawsuit filed by Marseille claims the shooting was an undue use of force, arguing that Jameson did not display aggressive behavior. The LAPD has not commented on the incident due to the ongoing litigation.
