A parasite known as Cyclospora cayetanensis is linked to hundreds of cases of stomach and intestinal illness across the United States, with at least 145 confirmed cases in 17 states, including Texas, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While no deaths have been reported, 20 individuals have been hospitalized due to the infection.

The CDC indicates that the parasite spreads through contaminated food or water, primarily linked to produce. San Antonio Metro Health is monitoring the situation but reports no cases in San Antonio at this time. Health officials have not identified a common source for the confirmed cases.

As a precaution, health officials recommend washing produce thoroughly before consumption, practicing good hand hygiene, and avoiding swallowing water during recreational activities. Symptoms of Cyclospora infection include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, and nausea. Most individuals with healthy immune systems recover without treatment, although the infection can persist for several days to a month or longer.
