Teenager Dies, Another Critically Injured After Falling From Subway Train on Williamsburg Bridge

A 14-year-old boy has died and an 18-year-old remains in critical condition after falling from the top of a J train on the Williamsburg Bridge on Friday. According to police, the two teenagers were riding on top of the Manhattan-bound subway train in an activity known as "subway surfing" when the incident occurred.

The New York Police Department reported that the 14-year-old fell from the bridge into a lot near Delancey Street and Lewis Street, while the 18-year-old fell directly onto the subway tracks. Both teenagers were transported to Bellevue Hospital, where the 14-year-old was pronounced dead. The 18-year-old was listed in critical condition as of Saturday.

The incident highlights a persistent safety challenge for transit officials. According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), five people died in subway surfing incidents last year. The NYPD reported that as of May 23, there had been one subway surfing fatality and 75 arrests related to the activity this year.

In response to the tragedy, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow urged families, friends, and teachers to intervene and stop teenagers from participating in these stunts. The MTA has been utilizing public service announcements, media campaigns, and outreach to combat the trend, while also requesting that social media platforms quickly remove videos and photos of subway surfing.
