Eight Injured, Including Four Children, in Coney Island Cookout Shooting
NEW YORK – A shooting during a Fourth of July cookout near Coney Island beach left eight people injured, including four children, according to police. The incident occurred Saturday night in the courtyard of an apartment building located about a block from the Coney Island boardwalk.
Among the victims, a 21-year-old woman is in critical condition, while the remaining seven individuals are reported to be stable and expected to survive, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated on Sunday. The children involved in the shooting are aged 6, 7, 12, and 14.
Police reported that a suspect wearing a black mask fired shots into the courtyard where families had gathered for the holiday cookout. The shooter fled the scene, but authorities have since recovered a firearm. Commissioner Tisch noted that there were no prior disturbances reported at the gathering.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify and locate the suspect.
