Tibetan Activist Dies After Self-Immolation Outside UN Headquarters in New York
A 52-year-old man identified as Lobga Rangzen, a Tibetan activist, died after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, July 2. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when law enforcement responded to a 911 call and found the man with severe burns. He was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported that Rangzen was holding a Tibetan flag and appeared to be protesting against Chinese rule over Tibet. A live-streamed video from a Facebook account associated with him showed him engulfed in flames before collapsing on the ground. Two individuals used fire extinguishers to put out the flames.
Rangzen had previously called for unity among Tibetans and criticized the Chinese government for policies he claimed were aimed at erasing Tibetan identity and culture. His self-immolation comes amid heightened tensions regarding a new Chinese law mandating the use of the Chinese language in ethnic minority regions, which activists fear will further erode cultural practices.
The head of Tibet’s government-in-exile, Penpa Tsering, expressed deep sadness over the incident and urged Tibetans to value their lives in the ongoing struggle for Tibet. He called for international support and awareness regarding the challenges faced by Tibetans under Chinese governance. A crowd of supporters gathered outside the UN headquarters following the incident, reflecting the ongoing concerns about human rights in Tibet.
A UN spokesperson confirmed that the incident occurred after all scheduled meetings had concluded for the day, and no UN business was disrupted.
