Fort Worth Family Demands Unredacted Police Footage Three Months After Fatal Crash
The family of a 28-year-old man who died during a police pursuit in Fort Worth is demanding the release of full, unredacted body camera and dash camera footage of the incident. Nearly three months after the death of Kendrick Gipson, his relatives say they have only been allowed to view redacted portions of the video, leaving them with unanswered questions about the final moments of his life and the emergency response that followed.
According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the pursuit began in March when officers attempted to stop Gipson's vehicle because it was linked to an aggravated kidnapping investigation. Police noted that Gipson himself was not the suspect in the kidnapping case. Investigators said Gipson fled from officers along Interstate 35W, eventually losing control of his vehicle near Pharr Street and crashing into a concrete bridge pillar.
Fort Worth police stated that officers did not use a tactical vehicle intervention, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, during the chase. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled that Gipson died from blunt force injuries sustained in the crash.
Gipson's family members, including his sister Jamia Lemons and grandmother Debbie Gipson, are seeking to view the complete footage to understand what occurred immediately after the crash, including whether officers administered CPR. The family continues to wait for the release of the unredacted recordings as they seek closure.
