Bodycam Footage Released After Two Men Killed in Separate Fort Worth Police Shootings

The Fort Worth Police Department has released body and dashcam video from two separate, fatal officer-involved shootings that occurred within hours of each other on May 16. Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia shared the footage during a Friday morning news conference, addressing what he described as false narratives surrounding the first incident. Both suspects were killed during the early morning encounters, and one police sergeant was treated for minor injuries.

According to police, the first shooting occurred in the 4200 block of Wiman Drive after officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a disturbance and gunfire. Upon arrival, officers heard additional shots and encountered 25-year-old Emmitt Mayo . Chief Garcia said Mayo pointed a handgun modified with an illegal Glock switch to make it fully automatic at officers and fired at least once. An officer returned fire, fatally striking Mayo. Investigators later recovered approximately 30 shell casings from the scene.

The second incident began shortly after 4:15 a.m. while officers were still investigating the first shooting. Police said 29-year-old Jorge Contreras drove a white SUV past the active crime scene multiple times, attempting to hit officers standing near their patrol cars. A 15-minute pursuit ensued, ending off Interstate 820 near Lancaster Avenue after police deployed stop sticks. When officers approached the vehicle, Contreras allegedly reached for an officer's gun, prompting multiple officers to open fire. Contreras was killed, and a police sergeant sustained minor injuries from shrapnel.

Chief Garcia stated there is currently no indication that Mayo and Contreras knew each other, though investigators are still looking into any potential connections. The officers involved in both shootings have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, pending the outcome of internal investigations.
