Teacher Recovering After Shooting at Hill Country College Prep High School

A teacher who was shot by a student at Hill Country College Preparatory High School near Bulverde was released from a San Antonio hospital last week, local authorities have confirmed.

According to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred on March 30 and involved a 15-year-old student who is believed to have shot the teacher before turning the weapon on himself. The identities of both the teacher and the student have not been officially released. Sheriff Mark Reynolds stated Wednesday that their investigation remains ongoing.

Comal Independent School District Superintendent John E. Chapman III addressed the community in a video statement posted Wednesday. He noted that privacy protections under employment and student records mean neither the teacher nor the student’s name will be released by the district. Chapman added that the teacher continues to recover and has the support of the local community.

Authorities and media organizations have requested information about the student's identity, but the district has emphasized that federal student privacy laws extend even after the death of a minor. Earlier this week, the Comal County District Attorney’s Office sought guidance from the Texas Attorney General regarding whether the student’s identity must be disclosed.

In response to the shooting, Chapman announced plans for a new safety and security task force including parents, staff, and community members. This group will convene a series of meetings to review current safety practices and offer recommendations for improvements. The superintendent described the initiative as a long-term commitment to school safety.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident, and further details have not been released at this time.
