Charlotte Community in Shock After Teen’s Murder and Growing Calls to End Youth Violence
Tragedy in Northeast Charlotte
A community is mourning the loss of 16-year-old Tyshaun Stokes, who was killed in a drive-by shooting on Lambeth Drive near North Tryon Street on August 17. The incident turned what should have been the excitement of a new school year into heartbreak for the Stokes family, who are now left grieving.
Family members recalled the terrifying moments. According to Tyshaun’s aunt, LaToya Stokes, a car pulled onto the street, turned around, and someone leaned out of the window. After a brief exchange of words, gunfire erupted. Tyshaun was struck and, in his final moments, cried out that he had been hit.
Arrests Made in the Case
More than a week after the shooting, Charlotte police arrested two teenagers—aged 14 and 16—who now face first-degree murder charges. The older suspect will be tried as an adult. Authorities say the investigation remains active as they continue gathering information surrounding the crime.
Community Leaders Sound the Alarm
Lisa Crawford, Executive Director of Mothers of Murdered Offspring, described the growing crisis of youth violence as nothing short of an epidemic. She expressed deep sorrow not only for Tyshaun’s lost future but also for the two teenagers accused of making such a devastating choice.
“There is one life cut short, a family left shattered, and now two more young people who will live with the consequences of a terrible decision,” she said, emphasizing the urgent need for community action.
A Plea for Unity and Action
Crawford urged families and neighbors to come together to address the root causes of violence among youth. She stressed that while some individuals and organizations are making meaningful efforts, it is vital that every child benefits from stronger community support.
“We must unite and work for all of our children, not just a few. Until we do that, tragedies like this will keep repeating,” she said.
Ongoing Investigation
Charlotte police have asked anyone with information related to the case to come forward. The investigation continues as the city grapples with the emotional toll of another young life lost to gun violence.
