Robert Harrington Appointed Interim Mayor of Charlotte Following Vi Lyles' Retirement
Charlotte City Council has appointed Robert Harrington as the interim mayor, effective July 1, 2026, following the retirement of Vi Lyles. Harrington, who is the president of the North Carolina Bar Association, will serve the remaining 18 months of Lyles' term, which ends in December 2027.
The decision was made during a council meeting on June 22, where Harrington emerged victorious in a runoff after failing to secure the necessary six votes in the initial round. He received five nominations from the council prior to the runoff, surpassing candidates including Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell and former council member Harold Cogdell.
Harrington has not held an elected office before but has experience in various public service roles, including positions with the North Carolina Bar Association and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library System. His appointment comes as the city faces ongoing challenges, including the controversial I-77 toll lane project, which has financial implications for local municipalities.
Vi Lyles, who announced her retirement last month, served as mayor for five terms and is recognized as Charlotte's second-longest-serving mayor. She cited a desire to spend more time with family as her reason for stepping down.
