David Wayne King Dies in Hospital After Being Found Unresponsive at Duval County Jail
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) confirmed that a man who was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Duval County Jail last week has died, two days after the incident.
Authorities identified the man as 41-year-old David Wayne King. According to officials, the situation unfolded on Thursday when corrections staff members at the jail found King in his cell and unresponsive. Medical personnel within the facility began providing immediate care while Jacksonville Fire Rescue crews were called to the scene. Emergency responders then transported King to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Despite these medical efforts, JSO said King was pronounced dead late on Saturday evening.
In their official statement, JSO emphasized that the case is being investigated thoroughly. Detectives are working to understand the circumstances that led to King’s condition and eventual death. As part of the investigation, officers are gathering and reviewing all available information, including witness statements. They are also examining any possible factors within the facility that could be related to the incident.
“Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances leading up to and surrounding Mr. King’s death, reviewing all available information and interviewing witnesses,” the department said. JSO also confirmed that, based on the information currently available, there were no reports of use-of-force incidents involving King, either by corrections staff or by other inmates during his time in custody.
According to arrest records, King had been held at the Duval County Jail since early March. His detention followed his arrest on multiple charges, including Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Officials did not provide details regarding any prior medical issues or conditions he may have had before the Thursday incident.
The investigation remains ongoing. JSO has not given a timeline for when further updates or findings will be released, and it is expected that more information may become available once the review of witness statements and evidence is complete.
