Mexican Tourist Killed by Truck in St. Augustine After ICE Encounter

A 28-year-old Mexican man, Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, was struck and killed by a tractor trailer in St. Augustine, Florida, on July 14 after fleeing from federal immigration officers. Coronilla Durán, who was vacationing in the U.S. on a tourist visa, had traveled from San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, to visit family in Atlanta before heading to Florida's east coast.

According to officials, Coronilla Durán was one of four individuals who fled a vehicle during an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. He ran across a busy road and into the path of a semi-truck, resulting in his death. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, but details about the circumstances leading to the ICE encounter remain unclear.

His wife, Yezzika Alamilla, confirmed to advocates that he was in the U.S. as a tourist and expressed confusion about the events that transpired. The Mexican government has been involved in assisting Alamilla, who is seeking to repatriate her husband's remains to Mexico. Coronilla Durán's body is expected to be transported from Orlando to his hometown for burial.
