Gunman Kills Two Family Members at Lexington Church After Shooting Officer Near Airport
A deadly shooting spree unfolded in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday, July 14, 2025, when a gunman opened fire on a police officer near Blue Grass Airport, then drove 15 miles across town and fatally shot two women at a local church. The gunman, later identified as Guy House, was killed by police at the scene.
The violence began shortly after 11:30 a.m., when House’s vehicle triggered a license plate alert, prompting a police officer to initiate a traffic stop outside Blue Grass Airport. Authorities say House shot and injured the officer, then fled the scene in his vehicle.
The gunman then drove to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he entered the building and demanded to see the mother of his three children. When told she was not present, House reportedly said, “Well, someone is gonna have to die then,” before opening fire.
Inside the church, 72-year-old Beverly Gumm was shot as she attempted to avoid the gunfire. Outside the building, House shot and killed 34-year-old Christina Combs, Gumm’s daughter. The victims were closely connected to the suspect — Combs was the sister of House’s former partner, and Gumm was her mother.
Two men were also injured in the church shooting. One remains in critical condition, while the other is listed as stable. The officer injured earlier outside the airport was also reported to be in stable condition as of Monday morning.
Police responded swiftly to the second shooting scene and fatally shot Guy House outside Richmond Road Baptist Church, bringing the rampage to an end. Investigators confirmed that House had personal ties to several of the individuals at the church, suggesting the attack was targeted rather than random.
The incident left the Lexington community stunned, as messages of mourning and support began circulating online. Star Rutherford, daughter of Beverly Gumm and sister of Christina Combs, confirmed their deaths in a Facebook post and launched fundraisers for the families of the victims. “I appreciate the prayers and thoughts,” she wrote, as messages of condolence poured in from across the state.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called for prayers for all affected by the tragedy, while Attorney General Russell Coleman issued a powerful statement condemning the violence. “Today, violence invaded the Lord’s House,” Coleman said. “The attack on law enforcement and people of faith in Lexington shocked the entire Commonwealth.”
Local authorities are continuing to investigate the sequence of events and any additional details surrounding the gunman’s motive and background. The shooting has reignited conversations in Kentucky about domestic violence, gun access, and mental health support, especially in cases involving familial conflict.
