Over $5 Million Floods Kentucky Primary as Trump Targets Rep. Thomas Massie for Defeat

A wave of outside money exceeding $5 million has poured into Kentucky's Republican primary contest ahead of the May election, as powerful political groups and President Donald Trump align against incumbent Representative Thomas Massie. Federal campaign finance disclosures reveal that a Super PAC connected to the Republican Jewish Coalition has directed more than $2.8 million into the race since late February, while the pro-Trump group MAGA KY has spent approximately $2.7 million. Massie's challenger, Ed Gallrein, is described as a farmer and U.S. Navy veteran running on a firmly pro-Trump platform. Massie, who has represented northern Kentucky since 2012, has long cultivated a Libertarian-leaning political identity that has repeatedly put him at odds with Republican leadership. He voted against funding Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system and was among a small number of House Republicans to oppose Trump's sweeping legislative package known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. His role in pushing through legislation that compelled the Justice Department to release documents from the Jeffrey Epstein case is widely seen as having accelerated the president's hostility toward him. Trump, who traveled to Hebron, Kentucky — located within Massie's district — publicly declared on his Truth Social platform that Massie would go down as the worst Republican congressman in congressional history. Massie fired back on social media, referencing the Epstein files legislation with pointed sarcasm. Massie has received roughly $1.18 million in outside support, a figure substantially outmatched by spending against him. The primary is considered his most difficult electoral challenge to date. The race follows the recent primary defeat of Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw, who lost to a challenger backed by Senator Ted Cruz, a contest that drew $3.8 million in outside spending — already surpassed by Kentucky's totals.
