Congressional Delegation Visits Kentucky ICE Detention Center Amid Concerns Over Medical Care for Chicago Detainees

U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez, along with two other Democratic Congress members, visited the Campbell County Detention Center in Newport, Kentucky, on Monday to investigate the conditions faced by two Chicagoans detained there. Ricardo, 39, and Octavio, 53, both diabetics, reported inadequate medical care and poor nutrition, raising alarms about their treatment. Ramirez described the conditions as 'devastating' and noted that both men have not received proper insulin, instead being given pre-diabetic medication. The facility, which has a capacity for 129 ICE detainees, was reported to be housing 430 inmates on the day of the visit.

During the visit, Ramirez expressed her concerns after hearing from the detainees about their experiences. She stated that Ricardo has been detained since September and has not had access to outdoor activities beyond a small room, which he described as insufficient for mental well-being. Octavio, detained for two months, has also faced similar issues with food quality, including expired items and a lack of balanced nutrition. Ramirez highlighted that detainees have been calling for help, indicating a dire situation.

In response to the allegations, Campbell County Jailer James Daley disputed claims regarding inadequate medical care and food options, asserting that the facility meets the necessary requirements for detainees. However, Ramirez and her colleagues are not satisfied with the explanations provided and are demanding immediate answers from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding the medical care and dietary provisions for the detainees.

Ramirez stated that she plans to follow up with DHS to ensure that her constituents receive the insulin they need and is prepared to return to the facility if necessary. The congressional delegation is also drafting a letter to DHS to address the urgent issues raised during their visit. The situation at the Campbell County Detention Center underscores ongoing concerns about the treatment of detainees in facilities contracted by ICE across the country.

As the investigation continues, the representatives are advocating for better oversight and conditions for detainees, emphasizing the importance of congressional visits to ensure accountability. The outcome of their inquiries and the response from DHS will be closely monitored by the community and advocacy groups.
