Man Fatally Shot by Police During Gunfire Exchange in South LA’s Hyde Park

A man was shot and killed by Los Angeles police officers Thursday evening during a confrontation that erupted into gunfire in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The incident, which drew a significant law enforcement presence, temporarily shut down multiple streets in the area.

The shooting occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024, near the intersection of Hyde Park and Crenshaw boulevards, a typically busy corridor in the southern part of the city. According to police, members of the Gang Enforcement Detail Unit were patrolling the area when they observed two men engaged in a heated argument just south of Hyde Park.

As officers moved in to investigate, the confrontation reportedly escalated. One of the men opened fire, prompting officers to return fire. The suspect was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, police confirmed.

Authorities said the suspect’s firearm was recovered from the scene. It remains unclear whether the suspect was targeting the officers or the man he had been arguing with before the shooting began. The second individual involved in the altercation was unharmed and was being questioned by detectives.

No officers were injured during the incident.

In the aftermath of the shooting, more than a dozen LAPD units were deployed to secure the scene along Crenshaw Boulevard, where a skirmish line was formed to control onlookers and maintain order as investigators combed through evidence. Aerial footage showed a heavy police presence and crime scene tape blocking access to the area.

The LAPD is expected to conduct a full investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard protocol in such incidents. Body camera footage, ballistic evidence, and witness statements will play a crucial role in determining exactly what happened during the deadly exchange.
