Lake Fire Rages Near Silverwood Lake as Crews Battle Rapidly Spreading Blaze in San Bernardino County
A fast-moving wildfire erupted on Saturday near Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompting urgent evacuation orders as it swept through the dry foothills south of Hesperia.
The fire, now named the Lake Fire, was first reported around 4 p.m. in a recreational area nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, an area known for its scenic beauty and outdoor activities. Fueled by dense, dry brush and gusty winds, the flames quickly advanced at what officials described as a "dangerous rate of spread." This alarming pace led to an immediate and large-scale response, with a significant number of both air and ground firefighting resources mobilized to combat the growing threat.
By 8:45 p.m., the wildfire had scorched approximately 478 acres, continuing to burn aggressively through rugged terrain. Crews on the ground reported that the fire's behavior remained erratic and intense, with structures in the area at risk. Officials warned that the blaze could potentially expand to over 1,000 acres, especially as it moved northward through heavy vegetation.
The firefight is a collaborative effort, involving Cal Fire, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, and support from the San Bernardino National Forest. Together, these agencies worked to contain the perimeter and protect threatened homes and natural resources.
Evacuation orders were first issued around 5 p.m. for the Silverwood Lake area, with deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department carrying out the efforts swiftly. Not long after, firefighters expanded the evacuation zone, covering the region south of Highway 138, stretching from Highway 173 to Summit Valley Road. Residents in these areas were urged to evacuate immediately due to the proximity and direction of the flames.
Authorities strongly advised the public to avoid Highway 138 and Highway 173, as parts of the fire had reached both sides of the roadway. Highway 138 was closed between Old Mill Road and the I-15 Freeway, severely impacting travel in and out of the mountain region.
By 8 p.m., an evacuation warning had also been issued for areas north of Highway 138 and Highway 173, extending from Summit Valley Road to Arrowhead Lake Road, due to the growing unpredictability of the fire's path.
This incident is part of a growing concern across Southern California as rising summer temperatures, low humidity, and dry fuels heighten wildfire risks. With Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area being a popular weekend destination, the fire also disrupted outdoor plans for campers, hikers, and families visiting the lake, which sits at the heart of this threatened zone.
As firefighting efforts continue overnight, residents are urged to stay alert, monitor official updates, and be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
