Jacksonville Moves Ahead with AI-Powered Weapon Detection System to Boost Public Safety
City Council Approves New Security Initiative
In a unanimous vote, the Jacksonville City Council approved a cutting-edge public safety initiative that will bring artificial intelligence-based weapon detection to city and school surveillance systems. The system, known as "ZeroEyes," was proposed by Police Chief Marcus Wood and is designed to enhance the city’s ability to respond to threats quickly and effectively.
AI Technology to Detect Weapons in Real Time
The ZeroEyes platform integrates with existing security cameras to monitor for visible weapons. If a firearm or other dangerous weapon is detected, the system instantly alerts law enforcement and designated school officials, enabling rapid response before an incident occurs.
Three-Year Contract Approved
The council authorized a three-year agreement for the deployment of the ZeroEyes system in partnership with Jacksonville City Schools. The initiative will be funded through a grant for the first two years, while the city is expected to cover the cost of the third year.
Public Safety Takes Center Stage
Chief Marcus Wood emphasized the importance of investing in advanced security tools that can help prevent violence in public spaces and schools. City officials hope the system will serve as a proactive layer of protection for students, staff, and the broader community.
The council’s approval signals Jacksonville’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies that improve public safety while collaborating closely with school officials to ensure effective implementation.
