Greater Manchester Completes Historic Bee Network Public Bus Rollout with All-Electric Fleet and Expanded 24-Hour Night Services
The UK's First Fully Re-Regulated Metropolitan Bus Network Since 1986
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — In a transformative triumph for municipal transport sovereignty, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have completed the comprehensive city-region rollout of the landmark Bee Network. Marking the first time since nationwide deregulation in 1986 that a metropolitan authority outside London has taken full public control over its bus network, the final franchising tranche has successfully brought all bus routes across all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester under unified public specification and accountability.
Transitioning from a fragmented system of dozens of private commercial operators to a publicly managed franchising model, TfGM now directly establishes routes, timetables, service standards, and ticketing structures. The integrated yellow-liveried network binds buses seamlessly with Metrolink light rail, suburban trains, and active walking and cycling corridors into an accessible, London-style public transit system.
Surging Patronage, Enhanced Punctuality, and Affordable Capped Fares
Official operational performance metrics confirm that public regulation is delivering immediate structural benefits for local passengers. Systemwide bus patronage across franchised sectors has increased by more than 14 percent year-over-year, while on-time service reliability has jumped from an unreliable 66 percent under legacy private commercial operators to over 80 percent under TfGM’s contracted performance regime.
Crucially for households managing cost-of-living pressures, the network retains the affordable £2 single adult bus fare cap, alongside multi-modal daily fare caps that allow seamless, cost-effective transfers between buses and Metrolink trams using contactless smart cards and digital payment taps. Every fare pound collected is reinvested directly back into transit infrastructure, cleaner vehicles, and route expansion.
Zero-Emission Electric Fleet Expansion and Round-the-Clock Night Buses
At the technological forefront of the Bee Network is a rapid transition toward a 100 percent zero-emission bus fleet. Hundreds of British-built Alexander Dennis Enviro400 EV electric double-decker buses, manufactured with zero tailpipe emissions and powered by certified renewable electricity, are already serving high-density commuter corridors in Manchester, Salford, Oldham, Bolton, and Stockport.
Alongside vehicle decarbonization, TfGM has rolled out an aggressive expansion of 24-hour night bus services across all metropolitan boroughs. Operating high-frequency services through the early morning hours, the initiative provides safe, predictable, and affordable transit for shift workers across the night-time hospitality, healthcare, and logistics sectors, while bolstering public safety across the urban night economy.
Next Frontier: Integrating Suburban Commuter Rail into the Bee Network by 2028
With bus franchising fully consolidated, civic leaders and regional transport planners are focusing on the next milestone: bringing Greater Manchester’s eight primary suburban railway lines into the Bee Network by 2028. This integration will introduce contactless pay-as-you-go ticketing, aligned schedules, and unified customer service standards across local commuter trains.
Combined with the ongoing development of more than 2,600 miles of protected walking and cycling routes in the Bee Active network, Greater Manchester’s integrated mobility model serves as a national blueprint for green, equitable, and locally accountable public transportation.
