Hamburger Hochbahn Accelerates €2.8 Billion Driverless U-Bahn Line U5 with Next-Generation Alstom DT6 Train Fleet
Germany's Most Ambitious Rapid Transit Megaproject in Modern History
HAMBURG, Germany — Advancing the largest and most consequential public transit infrastructure program in Germany, municipal transit operator Hamburger Hochbahn AG and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg have reached pivotal engineering and procurement milestones on the landmark €2.8 billion driverless U-Bahn line U5. Representing the city's first entirely new rapid transit line in more than half a century, the monumental project will traverse Hamburg from Bramfeld in the east through City Nord, the historic city center, and out toward the Volkspark and Arenen in the west.
Once fully completed, the 25-kilometre fully underground line will serve 23 newly constructed subway stations, integrating with the existing U1, U2, U3, and U4 lines as well as the Hamburg S-Bahn regional rail network. Civil engineers project that the U5 will carry between 270,000 and 300,000 passenger journeys each day, removing tens of thousands of private automobile journeys from Hamburg’s surface road network and eliminating up to 100,000 metric tons of carbon emissions annually in alignment with Hamburg's legally binding climate neutrality roadmap.
Deployment of the Fully Automated GoA4 Alstom DT6 Metro Fleet
The technological cornerstone of the U5 megaproject is a major framework agreement with French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom to supply up to 374 next-generation DT6 (Doppeltriebwagen 6) metro trainsets, representing an investment valued at up to €2.8 billion. Assembled primarily at Alstom’s manufacturing center of excellence in Salzgitter, Germany, the DT6 fleet will be delivered in two distinct variants: the DT6-A, engineered without driving cabs for fully automated, unattended Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) driverless operations on the U5; and the DT6-F, equipped with driver cabs to gradually modernize and replace the aging DT4 fleet across existing U-Bahn lines.
Measuring 40 metres per four-car permanently coupled unit (capable of operating as 80-metre or 120-metre trains during peak surge hours), the DT6 trainsets feature a continuous open walkthrough gangway, panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, high-capacity dynamic digital route maps, full climate control, and integrated USB mobile charging ports. Low-floor passenger thresholds synchronize precisely with platform edges to provide barrier-free, level boarding for wheelchair users, seniors, and strollers across all 23 stations.
Pioneering Urbalis CBTC Signalling and 90-Second Operating Headways
To achieve exceptional transit frequency and passenger throughput, the U5 line is being equipped with Alstom’s state-of-the-art Urbalis Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling architecture. Operating via high-security wireless data loops, the computerized system continuously calculates train positions, speeds, and braking curves in real time, allowing trains to safely navigate the tunnels under flexible moving-block technology.
This automation enables the U5 to operate at astonishing 90-second headways (intervals) during peak rush hours, delivering unmatched system capacity without requiring human drivers. At underground stations, full-height automated platform screen doors (PSDs) will open and close in microsecond synchronization with train doors, eliminating platform falls, preventing debris from falling onto electrified third-rail tracks, and regulating tunnel ventilation and temperature.
Transforming Urban Mobility and Anchoring Hamburg’s Climate Neutrality Targets
Hamburg’s First Mayor and the Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition underscored that the U5 megaproject functions as the central nervous system for the city’s ambitious Hamburg-Takt mobility master plan, which guarantees that all Hamburg residents will have access to high-frequency public transportation within five minutes of their front door.
With heavy underground civil construction and tunnel boring advancing along the inaugural eastern segment between Bramfeld and City Nord/Borgweg, initial technical vehicle test operations are scheduled for 2028 ahead of passenger service launch. By uniting cutting-edge German rail manufacturing, zero-emission electric propulsion, and automated driverless safety systems, the U5 establishes a European benchmark for modern, climate-resilient metropolitan transit.
