Rome Inaugurates Landmark Metro Line C Archeo-Stations at Colosseo and Porta Metronia Uniting Subterranean Transit with Imperial Heritage
A Technological and Cultural Masterpiece Beneath the Eternal City
ROME, Lazio — In a monumental achievement for world transit engineering and cultural preservation, Roma Capitale, the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, and transport operator ATAC have officially opened the landmark central extension of Rome Metro Line C. The milestone is highlighted by the debut of two extraordinary 'archeo-stations'—Colosseo/Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia—bringing high-capacity, automated driverless rapid transit directly into the imperial heart of ancient Rome for the first time.
Delivered ahead of major Jubilee celebrations, the extension connects Rome’s dense eastern suburban districts directly to the historic center. By transforming transit stations into subterranean museum spaces, the megaproject harmonizes modern urban mobility with Rome's unparalleled classical antiquity, creating one of the most stunning public transit corridors anywhere in the world.
Direct Line B Interchange Beside the Colosseum and Roman Forum
The subterranean Colosseo/Fori Imperiali station establishes a crucial interchange hub directly linking Line C with Metro Line B, enabling seamless, step-free transfers for over 100,000 daily commuters without requiring crowded bus journeys or long walks. Situated more than 30 metres below street level, the station was excavated directly adjacent to the Flavian Amphitheatre (Colosseum) and the Temple of Venus and Roma.
To safeguard centuries-old imperial monuments above, civil engineering consortium Metro C S.c.p.A. (led by Webuild) deployed advanced artificial ground-freezing and compensation grouting techniques during tunneling. High-precision laser sensors monitored every millimeter of surrounding structural movement 24/7, ensuring that world heritage treasures remained entirely undisturbed throughout the deep cavern excavations.
Museum-Grade Subterranean Galleries Exhibiting Unearthed Antiquities
Designed in close collaboration with the Special Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome, both stations function as museum-grade cultural showcases. At Porta Metronia, commuters walk alongside the impeccably preserved remains of a 2nd-century AD Roman military barracks (Caserma Romana) and the lavish Commander’s House (Domus del Comandante), discovered during initial shaft boring.
The archaeological complex features intact geometric mosaic pavements, frescoed plaster walls, and an ancient water distribution basin, all exhibited in situ behind climate-controlled glass enclosures. At Colosseo/Fori Imperiali, multi-tiered concourses display ancient Roman agricultural tools, imperial marble columns, and structural artifacts unearthed from deep stratigraphic layers, accompanied by interactive multimedia historical displays.
Driverless Automation, Transit Equity, and City-Centre Decarbonization
Rome Metro Line C operates a modern fleet of driverless trainsets governed by Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) automation under Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4). With precision headways, continuous walk-through cabins, and automated full-height glass platform screen doors, the system offers maximum safety and passenger capacity.
Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri and Italian infrastructure leaders highlighted that the Line C extension removes tens of thousands of private automobile journeys from the historic center every day, dramatically reducing vehicle emissions along Via dei Fori Imperiali and preserving delicate ancient monuments from traffic vibrations. The project sets a global gold standard for building modern mass transit through the most archaeologically sensitive urban terrain on Earth.
