Transforming Amsterdam Zuid into a Premier International Multimodal Hub

AMSTERDAM, North Holland — In a monumental leap forward for regional accessibility and mass transit in the Netherlands, the Municipality of Amsterdam, railway infrastructure agency ProRail, and municipal transit authority GVB have achieved a crowning operational milestone within the generational €4+ billion Zuidasdok megaproject. Transport authorities have officially opened the brand-new Brittenpassage—a sprawling, subterranean passenger concourse measuring 15 metres wide on the Parnassusweg axis—providing state-of-the-art access for more than 100,000 daily commuters at Amsterdam Zuid station.

The opening of the Brittenpassage represents the first major passenger terminal delivered under the Zuidasdok initiative, engineered to transform Amsterdam Zuid into the country’s second-largest transport interchange and an unencumbered international rail hub connecting the Netherlands to major European capitals.

Relocation of GVB Metro Lines 50, 51, and 52 to Elevated Platforms

Synchronized directly with the passenger concourse opening, GVB has officially relocated operations for metro lines 50, 51, and 52 (Noord/Zuidlijn) to newly constructed, high-capacity platform viaducts situated directly above the Brittenpassage. Built adjacent to modernized heavy rail platforms that opened earlier in the construction cycle, the new metro platforms feature expansive glass-and-steel canopies, integrated tactile platform edge paving, and high-speed elevator banks providing step-free accessibility.

The elevated configuration enables frictionless, cross-modal transfers between regional commuter trains, international intercity rail services, and urban metro lines, slashing transfer walk times for thousands of corporate and university commuters traveling to the Zuidas business district, Vrije Universiteit (VU Amsterdam), and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Enabling Minervapassage Renovation and Undergrounding of the A10 Motorway

The activation of the Brittenpassage unlocks the next critical engineering phase of the Zuidasdok program. By diverting passenger flows into the new concourse, contractors under the 'New South' (Nieuw Zuid) consortium can now safely close the legacy 1970s-era Minervapassage for a comprehensive, multi-year reconstruction that will expand its width from 12 metres to 40 metres, creating a vibrant commercial transit arcade.

Simultaneously, heavy civil teams are advancing deep retaining wall construction and subterranean tunnel excavations required to bury the adjacent A10 Zuid motorway into twin underground tunnel tubes. Burying the eight-lane motorway will eliminate heavy vehicular noise and exhaust while stitching together previously severed northern and southern Zuidas neighborhoods.

Securing Sustainable Economic Mobility Across the Randstad Region

Dutch transport ministers and Amsterdam civic leaders emphasized that expanding Amsterdam Zuid is vital to accommodating passenger growth projected to surge from 80,000 to more than 250,000 daily travelers by 2035. By uniting rapid electric metro transit with international rail links and liberating surface land for green urban development, Amsterdam is pioneering a resilient, zero-emission mass transit blueprint for modern Europe.
