AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — The City of Amsterdam, national railway network operator ProRail, and municipal transit company GVB have initiated the final phase of technical inspections and architectural fit-outs for the landmark Brittenpassage, the monumental new passenger tunnel at Amsterdam Zuid Station. Scheduled to open officially to the public on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the 15-metre-wide subterranean passageway marks the most significant operational milestone to date on the multi-billion-euro Zuidasdok mega-project, which is transforming the southern hub into the Netherlands' premier multimodal international transit interchange.

Constructed approximately 200 metres west of the existing Minervapassage, the Brittenpassage has been engineered to relieve severe pedestrian crowding across the station, providing a spacious, light-filled underground thoroughfare connecting passenger flows directly between high-speed train platforms, regional metro lines, tram loops, and local bus bays.

Architectural Grandeur, Modern Amenities, and 2,000-Bicycle Garage

The new passenger concourse features high-ceilinged, contemporary architectural finishes punctuated by expansive glass skylights that channel natural daylight deep beneath the railway tracks. Passengers will benefit from high-capacity dual-direction escalators, panoramic glass elevators offering universal step-free access to all elevated platforms, digital touch-screen journey planners, and a dedicated retail arcade hosting bakeries, artisanal cafes, and convenience kiosks.

Reflecting the Netherlands’ world-renowned cycling culture, the Brittenpassage connects directly to an expansive, state-of-the-art subterranean bicycle parking garage with capacity for 2,000 bicycles. Equipped with automated tap-in contactless electronic gates and dynamic digital displays indicating vacant parking racks, the facility guarantees frictionless, sheltered transfers between bicycle commutes and intercity rail transit.

Catalyst for Full Renovation of the Historic Minervapassage

The public commissioning of the Brittenpassage serves as the critical operational catalyst for the next major phase of the Zuidasdok masterplan. Immediately following the November 1 opening, the cramped, legacy Minervapassage will be temporarily taken out of service to undergo a comprehensive, multi-year civil demolition and reconstruction.

Civil engineering teams will widen the Minervapassage from its current narrow 12-metre profile to an expansive 40-metre-wide grand concourse, complete with dedicated metro gates and additional track access stairs, ensuring the station can comfortably handle the more than 300,000 daily passenger movements projected by the mid-2030s.

Transforming the Zuidas District into a World-Class Transport Node

Dutch transport ministers and Amsterdam civic planners emphasized that the rapid transformation of Amsterdam Zuid is essential for national and European rail connectivity. By separating metro traffic from intercity lines and modernizing track geometry along the A10 Zuid corridor, the station is on track to rival or surpass Amsterdam Centraal in daily passenger capacity, serving as the northern gateway for high-speed Eurostar, ICE, and regional intercity services linking Amsterdam directly to Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam, Brussels, and Paris.
