New-Generation Stadler Class J Trains Enter Daily Passenger Service

BERLIN, Germany — In a major modernization milestone for Germany's largest urban transit operator, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has officially introduced its brand-new Class J large-profile subway trains into daily commercial passenger service along the pivotal U-Bahn Line U5. Manufactured by Swiss rail specialist Stadler, the bespoke trains represent the vanguard of BVG's multi-billion-euro rolling stock renewal programme, engineered to replace legacy trainsets that have traversed Berlin's subterranean tracks for over three decades.

Operating seamlessly between Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, and Hönow, the new Class J trains feature bright, continuous open gangways, step-free barrier-free boarding ramps, high-capacity climate ventilation systems, and expansive panoramic front windows that provide an airy, modern travel environment for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters.

Siemens Trainguard MT CBTC Modernizes Digital Train Control

To unlock unprecedented operational frequency and safety across the U5 corridor, BVG has partnered with Siemens Mobility to install advanced Trainguard MT Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling infrastructure. The digital signaling architecture enables semi-automated train operation (Grade of Automation 2 / GoA2), empowering onboard computers to control precision acceleration and braking while human operators supervise door closures and station platform safety.

Targeting full commercial commissioning by 2029, the CBTC upgrade will allow trains to operate under moving-block headways of under 90 seconds during peak morning and evening travel periods. This dramatic reduction in intervals expands passenger carrying capacity by up to 25 percent without requiring costly cavern excavations or physical station platform expansions.

Pioneering Energy Efficiency and Fleet Sustainability

Engineered with sustainability at the core, the Stadler Class J trainsets integrate lightweight extruded aluminum carbodies, high-efficiency traction converters, and regenerative electrodynamic braking. Kinetic deceleration energy is captured and fed back into the BVG direct-current power grid to power accelerating trains nearby, cutting net fleet electricity consumption by approximately 20 percent.

The subterranean stations along the U5 have also been upgraded with intelligent LED lighting matrices, automated platform surveillance cameras, and high-definition dynamic passenger information displays, setting an exemplary benchmark for public transit accessibility across the European Union.

Decarbonizing Greater Berlin Through World-Class Mass Transit

The Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment underscored that continuous capital investments into the U-Bahn network are indispensable to achieving the capital’s carbon neutrality goals. By integrating state-of-the-art rolling stock with cutting-edge digital signaling, Berlin continues to cement its reputation as a global leader in dependable, clean, and forward-looking metropolitan public transportation.
