Marking the first stage of regional heavy rail incorporation, the initiative brings 17 rail stations along commuter corridors connecting Manchester to Glossop and Stalybridge into a single, unified public transport ecosystem.

The transition marks the beginning of the end of fragmented rail governance across Greater Manchester, ensuring passenger timetables, customer signage, and station facilities meet consistent municipal quality benchmarks.

Seamless Contactless Tap-In Tap-Out Ticketing with Cross-Modal Fare Caps

The operational highlight of the December launch is the formal debut of London-style contactless 'tap-in, tap-out' bank card and smartphone fare payments across all 17 initial heavy rail stations. For the first time in regional history, commuters traveling on trains, franchised yellow Bee Network buses, and Metrolink trams will benefit from unified daily and weekly fare capping.

The smart ticketing system automatically computes the lowest possible multi-operator tariff, eliminating costly single-operator paper tickets and delivering substantial household savings for tens of thousands of daily cross-county commuters.

Network Expansion: 60 New Electric Buses and 38 Franchised Routes Awarded

Simultaneously bolstering surface connectivity, TfGM announced the formal award of major bus franchising service contracts to transport operator Go-Ahead. The newly finalized agreements will deploy 60 state-of-the-art zero-emission electric double-decker buses across 38 new orbital and feeder routes starting in early 2027.

The new routes are specifically engineered to provide seamless feeder links connecting suburban town centres and housing estates directly to newly integrated Bee Network rail hubs, closing transit connectivity gaps in historically underserved outer boroughs.

Paving the Pathway to Complete Municipal Rail Integration by 2030

TfGM transport executives confirmed that following the Glossop and Stalybridge deployment, the rail franchising program will expand rapidly to encompass eight lines and 64 stations by early 2028, leading to the full integration of all Greater Manchester rail stations by 2030.
