According to authorities, Ruiz was shot after he brandished a knife during a confrontation with four police officers on July 22. His ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his teenage daughter, highlighted the emotional toll on the young girl, stating, “Every day, she has to walk past his dying grounds and that memorial every day when she starts school.” Ruiz was shot just blocks away from where his daughter resides, deepening the tragedy felt by his family and community.

The public outcry over this incident reflects broader societal concerns regarding police tactics and accountability, particularly as communities grapple with the implications of systemic racism in law enforcement. As the investigation continues, many in Madison are calling for justice and change.
