Madison Police Officer Shoots and Kills Man During Arrest Attempt

A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, shot and killed a man during an attempted arrest on July 22, 2026. The incident occurred in the Marquette neighborhood after officers responded to reports of bicycle thefts. The man, identified as Corey Ruiz, was in his 30s and reportedly fled from officers on a bicycle before a struggle ensued at an intersection.

During the altercation, Ruiz allegedly pulled out a fixed-blade knife, injuring one officer. The officer then deployed a Taser, which was ineffective, leading to the officer firing his weapon. Video footage shows the officer shooting Ruiz three times shortly after the Taser was used. Ruiz was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson confirmed that four officers were involved in the incident, with only one officer firing his weapon. The injured officer's condition has not been disclosed, but it is not believed that their injuries were caused by the knife. All four officers have been placed on administrative leave as the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation conducts an investigation.

In the wake of the shooting, protests erupted in the area, with community members gathering to express their outrage. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Alder Davey Mayer have called for transparency in the investigation, while Chief Patterson urged the community to remain calm and recognize that additional video evidence exists that has not yet been made public.
