KYIV – In a tragic escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russian missile and drone strikes overnight killed at least 10 civilians, including children, and injured more than 50 across Ukraine, according to local officials on Thursday. The barrage, which intensified the near-daily assault on Ukrainian cities, prompted NATO to scramble its warplanes after one missile crossed into Polish airspace.

The assault resulted in extensive damage across multiple regions of Ukraine, with significant impacts felt in the capital city of Kyiv. Tens of thousands of residents sought refuge overnight in subway stations as fears of Russian attacks surged amid Ukraine's critical shortage of Western anti-ballistic missile defenses.

NATO confirmed that a Russian missile had entered Poland, landing in a rural area without causing injuries or damage. However, this incident heightens tensions between the military alliance and Russia, as European nations remain cautious about potential spillovers from the prolonged conflict. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte condemned the missile's incursion as “yet another reckless act by Russia.”

In Ukraine, the missile strikes impacted at least 10 regions. In Dnipropetrovsk, six casualties, including a 6-year-old girl and two boys aged 11 and 17, were reported as their home was destroyed by a missile. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation, stating, “This Russian terror once again proves that protection against the Russian missile threat is the most important task when it comes to saving the lives of our people.”

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the missile strikes targeted military sites, including air bases and arms factories. The scale of the attack was alarming, with over 70 missiles fired, along with at least 280 drones, of which more than 260 were reportedly intercepted by Ukrainian defense systems.

As NATO tracked the missile's path into Poland, they deployed military assets, including fighter jets and ground defenses, in response to the breach of airspace. The Polish military also reported the detection of fragments believed to be from a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has been ramping up its offensive against Russian supply lines, targeting warehouses belonging to the Russian online retailer Wildberries in retaliation. This marks a significant development in Ukraine's efforts to cripple logistical support for Russian military operations.

As the conflict continues to evolve, the situation remains fluid, with investigations ongoing into the missile strike's implications on regional security. Additionally, the humanitarian impact of these attacks continues to be dire, as civilians bear the brunt of the violence.
