Eleven Charged in Deaths of Seven Migrants Found in Laredo Shipping Container

Eleven individuals face charges related to the deaths of seven migrants, including a 14-year-old boy, who were trapped in a shipping container in Laredo, Texas. The migrants were smuggled into the United States and died from heat exposure after being sealed inside the container.

The incident occurred after the group boarded a train in Del Rio, Texas, intending to reach San Antonio. When smugglers opened the container, one migrant fell out, prompting the smugglers to close the door and flee. The next day, a worker at the Union Pacific Rail Yard in Laredo discovered the bodies after noticing a leg protruding from the container.

Authorities reported that the migrants, hailing from Honduras and Mexico, had paid between $1,500 and $10,000 for their transportation. The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Justin R. Simmons, stated that the container had no ventilation and temperatures reached between 88 and 92 degrees Fahrenheit that day. The group has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to transport aliens resulting in death, which carries a potential life sentence.

Of the eleven charged, four are U.S. citizens, two are permanent residents, and five were in the U.S. without legal status. One suspect was arrested on May 12, while eight others were apprehended in the following days. Two individuals remain at large.
