Eleven Charged in Smuggling Deaths of Seven Migrants in Laredo, Texas

Eleven individuals have been indicted in connection with the smuggling deaths of seven migrants, including a 14-year-old boy, found in a rail cargo container in Laredo, Texas. The indictment, unsealed on Friday, details how six migrants died inside the container, while another was discovered near the tracks in San Antonio. The group had boarded the train in Del Rio, Texas, intending to reach San Antonio. The container, which had no ventilation, was sealed and unable to be opened from the inside, leading to fatal conditions as temperatures reached up to 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Justin R. Simmons, stated that the migrants were from Honduras and Mexico and had paid between $1,500 and $10,000 for transportation. The defendants face charges of conspiracy to transport aliens resulting in death and aiding and abetting the transportation of aliens resulting in death, each carrying a potential life sentence. One defendant was arrested in Del Rio on May 12, while eight others were apprehended in central and south Texas last week. Two remain at large. The case highlights ongoing concerns about human smuggling via railroads, particularly in the Laredo area, a significant hub for U.S.-Mexico trade.
