Two Protesters Arrested Outside Philadelphia Mayor's Office Amid Budget Hunger Strike
Two progressive activists demanding changes to Philadelphia's city budget were arrested at City Hall on Tuesday after protesting outside the mayor's office. The arrests occurred amid an ongoing hunger strike by members of the Sunrise Movement, who are calling for increased funding for public services and affordable housing.
Erica Brown, a member of the Sunrise Movement, began a hunger strike on Thursday, May 21, demanding that Mayor Cherelle Parker's budget include an additional $400 million. The requested funds would support housing, schools, transit, libraries, recreation centers, renewable energy, and a food assistance program. Fellow activist Giovanna Troilo participated in the hunger strike for the first five days before shifting tactics to seek a direct meeting with the mayor.
Troilo and another unnamed activist were arrested on Tuesday after appearing outside Mayor Parker's office. A spokesperson for the mayor declined to comment on the activists' budget demands but stated that the arrests were made because the individuals were obstructing government employees from performing their duties.
The budget negotiations between Mayor Parker and the City Council are currently underway, with final spending decisions expected within the next two weeks. City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier expressed support for the protesters' goals, stating she fully believes in the housing recommendations being pushed by the hunger strikers.
