Saturated Soil Topples Trees Across New York and New Jersey, Damaging Homes and Vehicles
Saturated ground from heavy rain caused multiple large trees to topple across New York and New Jersey over the weekend, damaging vehicles, displacing residents from a home, and temporarily disrupting transit services. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
In Linden, New Jersey, a large tree fell onto a home on Academy Terrace at 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, rendering the structure uninhabitable. Homeowner Robert Goldson reported that the tree trunk struck the house, destroying the garage and the back end of the property. Local authorities confirmed that all occupants evacuated the home safely.
In Brooklyn, falling trees caused significant property damage. Shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, a tree fell onto a family car belonging to Aaron Williams on Union Street in the Brownsville neighborhood. Nearby, another large tree fell onto several parked cars near 2045 Union Street. Additionally, a large tree fell in Central Park near 63rd Street and Central Park Drive on Saturday night, blocking the roadway.
The weather also impacted regional transportation. On Saturday evening, a fallen tree blocked an NJ Transit train line, forcing a temporary suspension of service. NJ Transit officials restored service by Sunday morning.
