Sam Antonacci Hits Unusual Inside-the-Park Home Run for First MLB Homer in Chicago White Sox Win
Sam Antonacci, a 23-year-old utility player for the Chicago White Sox, made a memorable mark in his rookie season with his first major league home run—an inside-the-park effort—during a game in Phoenix on Tuesday.
The rare moment unfolded after Antonacci’s ground ball down the left field line was inadvertently touched by a field attendant. Despite clear video footage of interference, umpires ruled the play was not reviewable, allowing Antonacci to round the bases. He became the first White Sox player to record his first career home run by sprinting around the bases since Kevin Bell in 1976.
"No one was putting their hands up, so I just kept running," Antonacci said of the unexpected play. He later admitted to catching his breath after his dash around the bases. Earlier in the night, Antonacci narrowly missed a regular home run, settling for a triple on a deep drive to right-center field. The rookie finished with three RBIs, capping a strong performance following a challenging start since his call-up on April 15.
The game also featured notable contributions from teammates. Infielder Colson Montgomery added a traditional home run in the series opener, while power hitter Munetaka Murakami legged out two infield singles, demonstrating agility beyond his reputation as a slugger. Murakami hinted at wanting to show more speed, a sentiment echoed by manager Will Venable, who praised the diversity in Murakami’s play.
On the mound, right-hander Sean Burke earned his first victory in nearly a year, pitching six innings and breaking a 16-game winless stretch that dated back to June 25, 2025, also against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The White Sox continued their series in Phoenix with Antonacci’s milestone play and Burke’s return to form serving as highlights. The team looks to build on these performances as the road trip progresses. No further updates on the interference ruling were noted as of Wednesday morning.
