Two Men Arrested in San Diego for Illegal Street Racing; Dozens Cited

Authorities Crack Down on Dangerous Driving Activities

In San Diego, California, law enforcement officials arrested two individuals over the weekend as part of a significant operation targeting illegal street racing and sideshows. This crackdown, initiated around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday, was a collaborative effort between the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and the California Highway Patrol, aimed at curbing illegal street takeovers that have drawn increasing concern from the community.

The investigation began when authorities identified a social media group organizing a series of planned street takeovers spanning multiple intersections throughout the city. Key locations included Scripps Ranch Court and Scripps Ranch Boulevard, Antigua Boulevards in Clairemont Mesa, Otay Mesa Road and Ocean View Hills Parkway, as well as Tonawanda and Reo Drives.

Among the arrests was Joshua David Ruiz, an 18-year-old known for his active social media presence that reportedly features reckless driving acts. Ruiz was apprehended while allegedly participating in a sideshow driving a rented U-Haul pickup truck at the Scripps Ranch intersection. Estimates of damage caused by these activities are around $5,153, which investigators report reflects the seriousness of these street gatherings.

Ruiz faces multiple charges including felony vandalism, exhibition of speed, and reckless driving, and has been booked into the San Diego County Central Jail.

In addition to Ruiz, authorities arrested Jesus Arias-Ruiz Jr., a 27-year-old driving a blue BMW M4, who has a documented history of promoting illegal vehicle gatherings. As officers attempted to pull him over at the Scripps Ranch location, he fled at excessive speeds exceeding 100 mph, evading capture initially. His pursuit was ultimately terminated for public safety, although a helicopter from the SDPD continued to track him.

Arias-Ruiz was later apprehended on Monday with assistance from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was also booked at the central jail on charges including felony evading, felony vandalism, and reckless driving.

Aside from the two main arrests, the joint operation yielded a total of 12 other citations and arrests, which included two DUI charges, four misdemeanor citations, five for hazardous-moving violations, seven for equipment violations, and two vehicle impounds. Authorities indicated that investigations resulting from this operation are ongoing, suggesting a continued focus on enforcing laws against illegal street racing.

Although these events highlight a concerning trend of reckless driving behavior influenced by social media, law enforcement officials remain committed to enhancing public safety. As investigations proceed, they aim to address the root causes of such dangerous activities on local roadways.
