Hunter Harvey Placed on 15-Day Injured List with Triceps Inflammation

The Chicago Cubs placed reliever Hunter Harvey on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right triceps inflammation, retroactive to April 9. The move comes after Harvey, who has a history of injury setbacks, appeared in only two games so far this season. He last pitched on April 8 against Tampa Bay and did not recover as expected.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that the team is aiming to address the issue early before it becomes more serious. "Hopefully, it’s just a little bit of soreness in the triceps and we can get rid of it in 2-3 weeks and move on," Counsell stated. Given Harvey’s medical history, Counsell emphasized the need for caution, following warning signs in Harvey’s recovery. Currently, there are no plans for Harvey to undergo imaging on his arm.

To fill Harvey’s spot in the bullpen, the Cubs selected left-hander Charlie Barnes from Triple-A Iowa, where Barnes had a strong start to the season, posting a 3-0 record and a 2.38 ERA across three outings.

The Cubs bullpen has been tested by injuries in the early part of the season, including the recent placement of Phil Maton on the injured list on April 10. Harvey was signed by Chicago to a one-year, $6 million contract in the offseason after an injury-disturbed 2023 campaign with the Royals.

The Cubs continue their road trip this week with a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, beginning Monday.

As of Sunday, Harvey remains out of action and his status will be reassessed after the current 15-day injured list period.
