Tiger Woods Steps Away from Golf After DUI Charge in Florida Rollover Crash
Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he will step away from professional commitments to seek treatment following his arrest in connection with a rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida, last Friday.
According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Woods was driving his Land Rover when it collided with a trailer as a truck was turning into a driveway. The truck driver reported that Woods was traveling "at high speeds" before attempting to avoid the truck. Authorities said Woods tried to swerve but struck the trailer, after which he climbed out of his SUV through the window and was arrested on the scene for suspected driving under the influence (DUI).
An incident report noted that Woods, 50, displayed signs of impairment and was found with opioid pain pills in his possession. He reportedly told deputies that he had taken the medication earlier that morning. Woods submitted to a breath test at the Martin County Jail but refused a urine test, according to law enforcement. The report also indicated that Woods had glanced at his cellphone and did not notice the slowing truck before the collision.
In a statement posted to social media hours after pleading not guilty, Woods said, “This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.” He emphasized his commitment to taking the necessary time for personal and professional growth.
Woods has previously faced legal and health challenges related to driving incidents, including a 2017 DUI arrest in Florida and a serious 2021 crash in California. As of Tuesday, Woods has not admitted guilt in the current case and is seeking treatment, with the investigation ongoing.
