Man Sentenced for Knife Attack on Deputies in Highlands Ranch

A Littleton man, identified as 31-year-old Corbin Klein, has been sentenced to 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections following a knife attack on deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The sentence was imposed on Monday, according to the 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office.

Jury Conviction and Charges

In October, a jury convicted Klein on several charges. Among those charges was first-degree assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon. The conviction and subsequent sentencing arose from a series of incidents that occurred in 2024.

Initial Incident at King Soopers Pride Display

Prosecutors stated that the case originated when Klein vandalized a Pride display at a King Soopers store on Wildcat Reserve Parkway in Highlands Ranch in 2024. Later the same day, prosecutors said he returned to the same store and stole several balloons from the Pride display.

Deputies Track Suspect to Second King Soopers

According to prosecutors, Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Rick Raymond and Lt. (now Cmdr.) Lori Bronner located Klein at another King Soopers store on Red Cedar Drive. They tracked him there after learning that he had called the store and said he planned to pick up more balloons.

Knife Confrontation and Arrest

When the deputies confronted Klein inside the King Soopers on Red Cedar Drive, prosecutors said he pulled a knife and approached them. After a tense standoff, the deputies quickly subdued him. Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly stated that no one was seriously injured and that the confrontation was safely resolved.

Prior Report to Law Enforcement

Court testimony established that Klein's father contacted law enforcement the day before the incident. He reported concerns that his son was suicidal and had made threats to harm immigrants and himself.

Defendant’s Testimony Regarding Mental Health

In court, the 23rd Judicial District Attorney stated that Klein testified he had been experiencing a mental health episode after being laid off from work and after his dog died.
