Wildland firefighters gathered in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Sunday to honor Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson, who lost their lives while fighting wildfires on June 27. The memorial service highlighted their bravery and dedication to public service, with U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy stating that their impact extended beyond the firefighting community.

The three firefighters were part of a Helitack crew that was trapped by flames in Mesa County. They had deployed emergency protective shelters, a last resort for firefighters. As of Sunday, nearly 40 large wildfires continue to burn across the Western United States, with significant activity in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. The Aspen Acres fire, which has burned approximately 136 square miles south of Colorado Springs, has led to evacuations in four counties and has damaged or destroyed over 200 structures. National Guard soldiers have been deployed to assist with road checkpoints in the affected areas.
