Power Outage Affects Thousands of PG&E Customers in San Francisco
Major Power Outage Continues in San Francisco
About 21,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers in San Francisco were still without electricity on Sunday morning following a large power outage that began on Saturday and left roughly one-third of the city without power.
Restoration Progress and Affected Areas
PG&E reported on Sunday morning that it had restored power to approximately 110,000 customers in San Francisco. Despite that progress, the utility stated that about 21,000 customers remained without service. The company identified the Presidio, the Richmond District, Golden Gate Park, and small areas within Downtown San Francisco as locations where power had not yet been restored.
Substation Fire and Damage
According to PG&E, a fire occurred at one of its substations in San Francisco. The utility said the incident caused what it described as significant and extensive damage to the facility. PG&E stated that repairs and the safe restoration of service would be complex. In response, the company reported mobilizing additional engineers and electricians to work on the damaged substation and the affected electrical infrastructure.
No Timeline for Full Restoration
PG&E stated that, as of Sunday morning, it did not have an estimated time for when power would be fully restored to all remaining customers in San Francisco. The utility indicated that work was ongoing to address the damage and return electrical service to the affected neighborhoods.
Waymo Suspends Robotaxi Service
During the San Francisco power outage, autonomous driving technology company Waymo suspended its robotaxi ride-hailing services in the city. The company stated that it had temporarily halted operations because of the broad power outage in San Francisco. Waymo said it was focusing on keeping its riders safe and on ensuring that emergency personnel had the clear access they needed to carry out their work while the outage and restoration efforts continued.
