One Dead, Three Missing After Boat Sinks Near Alcatraz Island

One person has died and three others are missing after a boat sank in the San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island on Tuesday. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when authorities received a report of a boat fire between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The San Francisco Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen reported that a police marine unit was the first to arrive and rescued a man in severe distress from the water, but he was later pronounced dead at Gashouse Cove. Of the 20 people initially believed to be on board the 50-foot cabin cruiser named Volare, 13 were brought safely to shore, while three were hospitalized with stable conditions due to impact injuries from jumping into the water. The cause of the sinking, which occurred approximately 600 yards from Alcatraz, remains unclear, although witnesses indicated rough seas may have contributed. Search efforts involving 11 vessels are ongoing, with a family reunification center established at Fort Mason for those affected.
