San Francisco Archdiocese Settles Child Abuse Lawsuits for $395 Million
The San Francisco Archdiocese has agreed to a $395 million settlement to resolve over 500 lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse, according to plaintiffs’ attorneys. This settlement, announced on Monday, will benefit approximately 530 survivors and includes a requirement for Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone to write apology letters to each survivor.
As part of the agreement, the archdiocese will implement reforms aimed at enhancing child protection and transparency. These reforms include creating a public list of clergy accused of abuse and prohibiting confidentiality agreements that silence survivors, as stated by attorney Jeff Anderson, who represents many of the victims.
The settlement follows a three-year negotiation process and comes in the wake of similar agreements by other California archdioceses, including a record settlement by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024. The San Francisco Archdiocese serves approximately 440,000 Catholics across San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties.
Anderson noted that a committee of survivors will oversee the distribution of the settlement funds, ensuring an equitable process based on individual circumstances. The archbishop expressed hope that the settlement would allow for healing and a path forward for survivors.
