Federal Agents Begin DHS Immigration Operation in Charlotte

Operation Charlotte’s Web Announced by DHS

Federal agents have begun an immigration enforcement operation in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Department of Homeland Security announced the action, named “Operation Charlotte’s Web,” on Saturday and stated that the operation targets what it described as “criminal illegal aliens.” The deployment marks part of President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown since returning to office.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the agency is increasing law enforcement presence in Charlotte to remove individuals it identifies as public safety risks. Internal government documents cited by CBS News indicated that armored vehicles and special operations teams could be involved in the North Charlotte activity.

Local Officials Respond to Charlotte Operation

Local officials, including Mayor Li Vyles, issued a joint statement criticizing the federal operation. The officials said the action was creating fear and uncertainty in Charlotte communities. US Representative Alma Adams also said she was informed of the federal operation earlier in the week and expressed concern.

According to DHS, the operation is tied to nearly 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees who were released in North Carolina. DHS attributed the releases to “sanctuary policies.” Charlotte is not a sanctuary city but is designated as a “certified welcoming city,” a program focused on immigration inclusion.

Incidents Reported During Early Raids

Church members reported fleeing into nearby woods when federal agents arrived at a church in east Charlotte, according to The Charlotte Observer. One man was detained during the incident. A 15-year-old witness said they believed the church would be a safe location.

Officials said several organizations are prepared to assist individuals seeking legal guidance on immigration matters. DHS has not indicated how long Operation Charlotte’s Web will continue. A similar operation in Chicago that began in September remains ongoing.

Next Cities Identified for Immigration Crackdown

CBS reported that New Orleans is expected to be the next city targeted, with as many as 200 agents possibly being deployed. Previous operations in cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles have faced criticism over concerns of excessive force. Charlotte, with about 17% of residents born outside the United States, is the latest location in the expanding federal immigration initiative.
