Tragedy Strikes as Unlicensed Driver Allegedly Kills 3-Year-Old Boy After Fireworks Festival

A devastating incident unfolded in Livonia, Michigan, where a joyful evening turned into heartbreak for one family. A 55-year-old woman, Tammy Sandoval, is facing serious charges after allegedly striking a mother and her two children with her vehicle while they were crossing the street. The crash claimed the life of 3-year-old Khalil Robinson and left his twin sister, Khloe, and their mother, Tia Robinson, injured.

The family had just attended a community fireworks show on Sunday night, part of a local celebration that drew many families to enjoy the evening together. As they crossed the road after the event, a vehicle, allegedly driven by Sandoval, struck them. Instead of stopping to help, the driver reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind chaos and tragedy.

Authorities arrested Sandoval the following day and uncovered that she did not possess a valid driver's license at the time of the crash. Her license had been suspended in 2023 after she refused to comply with a roadside sobriety test during a prior traffic stop, according to police findings.

Khalil’s grandmother, Regina Robinson, expressed disbelief and pain over the senseless loss. “Why would anyone just keep going?” she said, recalling how the twins were thrilled to attend the carnival and fireworks that evening. “Why wouldn’t they stop to help or check if the kids were okay?”

Khalil’s grandfather, Michael Robinson, shared memories of the strong bond between the twins. “He was such a loving boy. If I gave him candy, he’d always take one for his sister too,” he remembered. “They had their moments, but the love between them was always there.”

The charges against Sandoval are severe. She faces:

One count of operating while license suspended, revoked, or denied – causing death

Two counts of operating while license suspended, revoked, or denied – causing serious injury

Two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident – causing serious impairment

One count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident while at fault – causing death

Sandoval has pleaded not guilty and is currently held on a $600,000 cash or surety bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 10.

As the community reels from this incident, residents are calling for increased safety measures during public events. The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of unlicensed and reckless driving—especially during celebrations where families gather in large numbers near busy roads.
