Three Rescued After Getting Lost in Remote Michigan Woods
Lost Tubers Found Safe in Muskegon
Last week, three individuals, including two women and a child, were discovered safe after spending three harrowing days lost in the dense woods of Western Michigan. The group was tubing on the Muskegon River when they encountered a dangerous situation that ultimately led them away from the waterway.
Michigan State Police have identified the rescued trio as Jazzmin Hock, 28, and her cousin Sarah Vida, also 28, both from Muskegon, along with Vida's 9-year-old son, Kayden Kovalcik. The three were located on Friday after a comprehensive search involving air, land, and water resources.
According to local authorities, the tubing incident escalated when the inflatable tubes struck a logjam, resulting in deflation. This led the group to venture off the usual path, which ultimately caused their disorientation. On the second day of the search, which began when family members reported them missing, responders found the deflated tubes on the river.
The search was initiated after Hock's father notified authorities upon discovering her vehicle at the Maple Island Boat Launch. He reported that the vehicle had a broken window and that family members had been unable to reach the three via phone.
Successful Rescue Amid Challenging Conditions
The rescue operation turned hopeful when several Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers and state troopers, who were acquainted with the area, began to narrow down their search. They utilized physical indicators like footprints and disturbances in the vegetation to trace the group's route.
State Trooper Zach Murphy, part of the rescue team, described the moment they located the three. Utilizing body camera footage, he recounted the emotions felt upon reaching them, noting, "The thought that kept going through my head was I can’t believe that three people, allegedly in bathing suits, with no shoes on, were making the trek through that swamp.”
Upon finding the lost tubers, the young boy, Kayden, recounted their adventure, stating, “We got lost on the river. We went to the river, and we were on the river for four hours.” The young boy's thrill at being found was palpable, highlighting the ordeal they had endured while lost.
Medical personnel evaluated the group for scrapes, cuts, dehydration, and exhaustion. It was reported that they were treated at nearby facilities and released shortly afterward.
Conservation Officer Cameron Wright remarked on the remoteness of their location, describing it as “the furthest point from any roads or houses.” This specificity in terrain exacerbated the challenge of the search and recovery efforts but ultimately underscored the successful coordination of the rescue team.
