Chicago Department of Aviation Kicks Off Multi-Billion-Dollar ORDNext Program with Concourse D

CHICAGO, Illinois — Marking the beginning of the most transformative terminal expansion in the history of civil aviation in the Midwest, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) have broken ground on the brand-new $1.3 billion Concourse D at O'Hare International Airport. The milestone launches ORDNext, the multi-billion-dollar core redevelopment phase of the broader O'Hare 21 capital modernization master plan designed to completely reinvent passenger circulation, customs processing, and domestic-to-international transfer efficiency.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in collaboration with global aviation architects, the new satellite facility will add 19 high-capacity, narrow-body and wide-body gates. Concourse D incorporates a soaring nature-inspired architectural layout featuring slender structural 'tree columns', expansive daylit passenger concourses, and a central skylight oculus engineered to reduce terminal transit stress and elevate passenger comfort.

Strategic Phasing and Parallel Upgrades Across Terminal 3 and Airfield Corridors

The launch of Concourse D coincides with an optimized phasing agreement reached between municipal aviation planners and major hub carriers United Airlines and American Airlines:

  • Dual-Carrier Gate Efficiency: Concourse D features flexible dual-codeshare gates equipped with automated passenger boarding bridges, dynamic biometric gate portals, and an elevated international arrivals corridor that routes deplaning travelers directly to Federal Inspection Services.
  • Elevate T3 Expansion: Construction crews are accelerating structural extensions on Terminal 3 concourses, widening central corridors by 12 feet, adding 10,000 square feet of concessions and airline lounge space, and revamping baggage handling conveyor automation.
  • Accelerated Concourse E Delivery: Phasing adjustments prioritize the early delivery of a 14-gate Concourse E phase, creating transitional operational headroom before work commences on the 2.2 million-square-foot central O'Hare Global Terminal.
  • I-490 Regional Highway Integration: Surface transportation links are being modernized on the western airport perimeter, tying into the new I-490 Tollway and reconstructed Touhy Avenue to streamline logistics and cargo trucking corridors.

Economic Catalyst and Future-Ready Global Aviation Gateway

As O'Hare manages surging passenger volumes exceeding 80 million travelers annually, the ORDNext transformation establishes critical capacity resilience for the next half-century. The capital investment generates tens of thousands of skilled union construction and engineering jobs while solidifying Chicago's status as a preeminent international crossroads for commerce, logistics, and tourism.

Through disciplined capital execution, world-class sustainable architecture, and collaborative airline partnerships, Chicago is setting a benchmark for American airport infrastructure capable of supporting seamless, sustainable travel for decades to come.
