Major Subterranean Milestone for Vienna's Largest Public Transit Expansion

VIENNA, Austria — In a momentous civil engineering and sustainable mobility achievement for Central Europe, the City of Vienna (Stadt Wien) and municipal transit operator Wiener Linien have celebrated a major underground milestone across the landmark €2 billion U2xU5 metro network expansion. Working deep beneath Vienna's historic urban fabric, the colossal 1,200-tonne Herrenknecht Earth Pressure Balance tunnel boring machine (TBM)—affectionately christened 'Debohra'—has officially completed the decisive breakthrough of the first new southern U2 tunnel tube between Matzleinsdorfer Platz and the Augustinplatz emergency shaft, passing beneath dense residential quarters and major rail junctions at Pilgramgasse.

Measuring roughly 120 metres in length with a cutterhead diameter of 6.84 metres, the custom-engineered TBM has operated 24 hours a day since launching in autumn 2024. Overcoming Vienna’s complex geotechnical geology comprising dense clay, fine silt, and pressurized water-bearing gravel beds, 'Debohra' installed thousands of precision-engineered precast reinforced concrete lining rings, completing a durable, watertight tunnel structure built for an operational lifespan exceeding 100 years.

Vienna's First Fully Automated Driverless Metro Line with GoA4 Automation

The U2xU5 megaproject fundamentally reorganizes Vienna's rapid transit grid by creating an interconnected two-phase subway overhaul. The southern leg of the existing U2 line is being extended to Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Wienerberg, while the central segment from Karlsplatz to Universitätsstraße is being completely transformed into the brand-new U5 line—Vienna’s first fully automated, driverless rapid transit corridor.

Operating with cutting-edge Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) unattended train technology, the U5 will deploy next-generation 'X-Wagen' driverless trainsets manufactured by Siemens Mobility. Governed by high-precision Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) digital signaling, autonomous trainsets will communicate in real time, enabling safe operating headways of just 90 seconds during peak commuting hours to dynamically absorb surges in passenger demand without manual intervention.

Full-Height Platform Screen Doors and Modernized Passenger Interchanges

To guarantee uncompromising passenger safety across driverless operations, every station along the new U5 line—including Frankhplatz, Rathaus, and Karlsplatz—is being equipped with automated, full-height tempered glass Platform Screen Doors (PSDs). Synchronizing instantaneously with train doors upon stopping, the glass barriers completely eliminate track incursions, unauthorized trespassing, and service delays, while significantly enhancing underground air circulation, thermal climate control, and acoustic dampening across passenger waiting halls.

At the complex Pilgramgasse interchange, civil engineering joint ventures led by PORR and STRABAG are constructing an intricate, multi-level subterranean nexus directly beneath the active U4 line and the Wien River bed. Utilizing specialized jet grouting, freezing methods, and micropile underpinning curtains, the station concourses are excavated without ever interrupting regular passenger rail service on the U4.

Catalyst for Vienna's Climate Neutrality by 2040 and Regional Decarbonization

Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig and city environmental ministers highlighted that the U2xU5 expansion serves as the structural foundation for the city’s statutory Climate Guide 2040. Upon full operational commissioning, the expanded lines will transport more than 300,000 additional passengers daily, diverting an estimated 75,000 private car trips off Vienna’s metropolitan road grid every single day.

By permanently avoiding more than 75,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the zero-emission electric rail network provides clean, high-speed mobility for newly emerging residential districts and business campuses. The U2xU5 project reinforces Vienna’s undisputed global status as the world’s most livable, sustainable, and transit-friendly capital for decades to come.
