Double Subterranean Tunnel Breakthrough on Austria's Largest Climate Project

VIENNA, Vienna — In an extraordinary civil engineering milestone for Central European transit, municipal transport operator Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna have officially achieved a double tunnel breakthrough on the monumental €6 billion U2xU5 subway megaproject. The giant Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Debohra, measuring over 65 metres in length and weighing 1,200 tonnes, has successfully excavated both twin four-kilometre subterranean tunnel tubes between Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Augustinplatz, finishing heavy excavation on the southern U2 extension ahead of schedule.

Recognized as Vienna’s largest public transport and climate protection undertaking in history, the U2xU5 initiative is redesigning the Austrian capital's transit spine. In total, the project introduces 11 kilometres of new trackage and 12 modern stations, expanding network capacity by more than 300 million passenger journeys annually while taking thousands of daily automobile trips off Vienna's historic Ringstraße and arterial thoroughfares.

Structural Completion of Frankhplatz Station on the Automated U5 Line

Simultaneously with the tunneling milestone, civil engineering crews have completed the core structural shell and concourses of the brand-new Frankhplatz station, the pivotal terminus of the first phase of the Line U5. Situated directly adjacent to the University of Vienna campus and the Alsergrund medical cluster, Frankhplatz will provide rapid transit access for over 30,000 university students, hospital staff, and neighborhood residents daily.

Line U5 represents Vienna’s very first fully automated, driverless subway line, operating under Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) standards with Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC). Stations across the U5 corridor are engineered with full-height automated glass platform screen doors (PSDs) that synchronize flawlessly with train cabin doors, completely eliminating platform fall hazards and track intrusions while optimizing air conditioning and energy efficiency.

Eco-Friendly Central Shaft Logistics and High-Efficiency X-Wagen Fleet

To protect Vienna's residential neighborhoods from construction disruption, Wiener Linien and contractor consortiums PORR and STRABAG implemented an ingenious zero-emission logistics concept. Nearly 1.2 million tonnes of excavated earth and rock were hoisted out exclusively through a singular central deep-shaft at Matzleinsdorfer Platz and transported via rail freight directly to eco-restoration recycling centers, saving over 75,000 heavy diesel truck journeys across city streets.

The line will be serviced by the cutting-edge X-Wagen trainset fleet manufactured by Siemens Mobility at their Vienna-Simmering plant. The six-car walk-through trainsets feature lightweight aluminum construction, electro-dynamic regenerative braking that feeds power back into the electrical third-rail grid, barrier-free level boarding ramps, and dynamic digital passenger infotainment maps displaying live interchange connections.

A Global Model for Urban Mobility and Net-Zero Decarbonization

City of Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig and Wiener Linien executives emphasized that the U2xU5 project will eliminate more than 75,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year once fully operational. By connecting southern residential districts seamlessly with the medical, university, and administrative core without transfers, Vienna cements its international reputation as the world’s most livable city, demonstrating how bold public transit investment drives sustainable economic prosperity.
