Vienna Completes Key U2xU5 Subway Tunnels as Tunnel Boring Machine 'Debohra' Breaks Through Ahead of Fully Automated Line U5 Integration
Major Engineering Breakthrough Beneath the Austrian Capital
VIENNA, Austria — Marking a decisive engineering triumph in Central Europe’s largest urban transit undertaking, municipal transit operator Wiener Linien and construction partner PORR have successfully completed the twin underground tunnel tubes for the southern extension of Vienna’s Line U2. The 120-meter-long tunnel boring machine (TBM) affectionately christened 'Debohra' has completed its final subterranean bore drive, breaking through into the extraction shaft at Augustinplatz after excavating thousands of meters through intricate geology between Matzleinsdorfer Platz and the city center.
The milestone represents a critical advancement for the overarching U2xU5 metro expansion, a generational multi-billion-euro project that reorganizes the southern and western axes of Vienna's rapid transit grid to keep pace with rapid population growth and climate protection goals.
Complex Underground Station Excavations at Rathaus and Frankhplatz
With the primary tunneling phase behind it, engineering focus is shifting to heavy station cavern fit-out and track installation. At the pivotal Rathaus station interchange, civil crews are constructing an immense underground nexus 30 meters beneath the historic City Hall, integrating new platform tunnels for the extended U2 beneath the existing station while reconfiguring upper platforms to serve the upcoming Line U5.
Nearby, structural civil works are progressing toward completion at the brand-new U5 Frankhplatz station in Vienna's 9th district (Alsergrund), adjacent to the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna campus, providing much-needed direct rapid transit access to the major medical and educational precinct.
Introducing Vienna's First Fully Automated Driverless Metro Line
The U2xU5 megaproject brings cutting-edge automation to the Austrian capital’s mass transit network. When commercial operations commence, Line U5 (operating from Karlsplatz through Rathaus to Frankhplatz) will debut as Vienna’s very first fully automated, driverless subway line.
The line will utilize Wiener Linien’s state-of-the-art X-Wagen trainsets manufactured by Siemens Mobility, featuring floor-to-ceiling platform screen doors at every station that open synchronously with train doors. Automatic train operation (ATO) will enable seamless 90-second rush-hour headways while optimizing energy recovery during braking, ensuring maximum passenger throughput and uncompromising trackside safety.
Decarbonizing Regional Mobility and Driving Climate Neutrality by 2040
City of Vienna mobility leaders and Wiener Linien executives emphasized that the U2xU5 network is the structural backbone of Vienna’s climate-neutrality roadmap for 2040. Upon full integration of both the extended U2 (eventually serving Wienerberg) and U5 (extending to Hernals), the system will deliver capacity for up to 300 million additional passenger trips annually, eliminating an estimated 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year by permanently replacing private motor vehicle journeys.
